 Historic
Smithfield Plantation, the home of Revolutionary War patriot
Colonel William Preston and his wife Susanna Smith Preston,
is owned
by APVA
Preservation
Virginia. Located in present-day Blacksburg, Virginia, at the
eastern continental divide, Smithfield was built at the edge
of the western frontier in 1774. In a land of log cabins and
physical hardship, Smithfield provided a haven of aristocratic
elegance and became the social and political center of the
county.
The
Prestons raised and educated 12 children at Smithfield. Their
descendents continued the family tradition of nation building
with three Virginia governors, four senators, legislators,
educators, and military leaders.
Today, Historic Smithfield Plantation interprets three generations
of the Prestons and other families that lived and worked at
Smithfield. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through the
home and visitors can tour the slave cabin, grounds, and kitchen
garden, all near the house.
