Opening Weekend: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Smithfield opens for the 2010 season with a celebration including colonial demonstrators and reenactors.

Thursday, April 14th, 7:30pm
Historic Lecture Series: Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. "Salt, Lead, and Rails: How Southwest Virginia’s Mineral Resources and Railroad Impacted Civil War Military Strategy" with Professor Bob Whisonant of the Department of Geology at Radford University who will present this talk as part of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the US Civil War. At the Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Free.

Anniversary Dinner: Wilderness Road Regional Museum. Reservations required. Famous buffet home-style dinner cooked in the museum's kitchen. Single $20, couple $38. Age 6-12 $10. Take-out available.

Sunday, April 24th, Sunrise
Easter Sunrise Service: Historic Smithfield Plantation. An historical re-enactment of an early American Presbyterian service and features live performance of sacred music. Free.

MAY

Art Exhibit: Montgomery Museum. Authors and Artists. Reception May 5th, 5-7pm.

Saturday, May 7th, 9am to 5pm
Heirloom Plant Sale: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Learn about colonial plant materials that were indigenous to the area, and purchase heirloom plants for your own garden. Plants supplied by Crows Nest Greenhouses, owner Jay Smith, and the Smithfield gardens. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Smithfield garden will be on hand for assistance and to answer questions. The house will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

Living History Day: Giles County Historical Society. Living history exhibits featuring "Mountain Women: At Work, At Ease" with demonstrators, food, and entertainment. The Museum, 1829 Andrew Johnston House, 1857 Doctor’s Office, and geneaological Research Office will be open for visitors. Free.

18th Annual Coal Miners Day: Coal Mining Heritage Association.
At the McCoy Community Park. Features exhibits, demonstrations, live music, great food, story-telling, antique autos, and a Memorial Service for Deceased Miners and Wives.

Saturday, June 18th, 9:30am to 3:30pm
Quilt Documentation Day: Giles County Historical Society. For those with quilts made in Giles County from pre-colonial times through 1999 to preserve the legacy of quilts and quilt makers for future generations. Descriptions and photographs will be collected to record the history of the quilts and quilt makers. Pre-registration required. $5 per quilt documented.

Sunday, June 19th
Juneteenth Commemoration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. A celebration of freedom on the lawn.  Admission is free.

Independence Day Celebration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Bring a picnic, family and friends to the grounds of Historic Smithfield Plantation, the circa 1774 home of Revolutionary War Colonel William Preston and his wife Susanna.

Civil War 150 Legacy Scanning Project: Giles County Historical Society.
Representatives from the Library of Virginia will be at the Historical Society to scan Civil War documents including letters, ledgers, diaries, maps, sketches, photographs, notices, and other papers to be included in the electronic archives at the Library of Virginia for use by researchers. Call 921-1050 for an appointment.

History Chat: Montgomery Museum. Visit the historic former Barnes-Surface Motor co. and Virginia Inn for a tour and chat with new owner Bob Poff to learn about the renovation and history of one of the oldest buildings in Christiansburg. This special event will be held on site at 4 W. Main St. The entrance will be under the yellow awning on So. Franklin St. across from the Montgomery County Court House.

Friday through Sunday, December 2 to 4, 1 - 5 pm
Holidays at Smithfield: Historic Smithfield Plantation.
The celebration includes tea and savory and sweet treats in Susanna’s Tea Room and tours of the elegantly decorated 1774 home. In addition there will be traditional music, children’s activities, shopping in the museum store, greenery sales and more!

December 3rd through 23rd
Christmas on the Wilderness Road: Wilderness Road Regional Museum.
Open house at the museum. Traditional Christmas with an emphasis on 19th century decorations. Sale of Mary Lee's Christmas candy, local history books, and other museum items make wonderful presents. Mulled cider to enjoy!

A Civil War Christmas Open House: Giles County Historical Society. Enjoy the Andrew Johnston House decorated for Christmas as it might have been during the Civil War.
