APRIL

Opening Weekend: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Smithfield opens for the 2010 season with a celebration including colonial demonstrators and reenactors.

St. Luke's and Odd Fellows Hall Grand Opening Celebration: Blacksburg Museum. Join Blacksburg Museum as they open the Odd Fellows Hall with exhibits about Blacksburg's African American History "From Civil War to Civil Rights."

Celebrating Mary: Glencoe Museum. A conversation and book signing with James Alexander Thom, author of "Follow the River" about Mary Draper Ingles. $30.

Cabin Days: Glencoe Museum. The Mary Draper Ingles cabin at the Ingles Farm will be open for visitors with demonstrations of life during the mid-18th century.

Saturday, May 8th, 9am to 5pm
Heirloom Plant Sale: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Learn about colonial plant materials that were indigenous to the area, and purchase heirloom plants for your own garden. Plants supplied by Crows Nest Greenhouses, owner Jay Smith, and the Smithfield gardens. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Smithfield garden will be on hand for assistance and to answer questions. The house will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

Thursday, May 20th, 7:30pm
Lecture Series: The Fincastle Resolutions in Context. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Speaker Dr. Jim Glanville. The Fincastle Resolutions, adopted in January 1775 by 13 representatives from Fincastle County in the colony of Virginia, was a list of statements addressed to the First Continental Congress.  This often misunderstood document expressed many of the same sentiments as the Declaration of Independence, and is a significant local connection to the turmoil that led to the American Revolution.  Dr. Glanville’s research clarifies the document and its effect on the political scene of the time period.  Locals such as William Preston, William Christian, William Ingles, John Montgomery, and William Campbell were among the Resolution’s signers. In the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Grand Opening: Floyd County Historical Society. Join Floyd County Historical Society as they celebrate the opening of their new headquarters in the old Ridgemont Hospital building.

Saturday, May 29, 12 to 5 pm
Living History Day: Giles County Historical Society. Living history exhibits featuring Civil War re-enactors and 18th and 19th century craft demonstrators. The Museum, 1829 Andrew Johnston House, 1857 Doctor’s Office, and geneaological Research Office will be open for visitors. Free. Also catch a sneak peak of the Celebration of the Needle Arts Show in the Andrew Johnston House.

A Celebration of the Needle Arts II: Giles County Historical Society. Needle arts exhibit in the Andrew Johnston House featuring the work of Betty Bales and needle arts demonstrators.

2nd Annual Spring Fashion Extravaganza: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Ponnie’s Boutique and Chantilly Lace will provide modern fashion. Vintage fashions will be modelled as well. Refreshments and a silent auction featuring work from local artists. Admission is $15. The fashion show will be about 45 minutes long. Sneak peak at the auction items beginning at 2:30pm. Rain date is June 13th.

Juneteenth Commemoration: Historic Smithfield Plantation.Having our Say:  The Delaney Sisters First 100 Years.”  Play shown on the lawn at Smithfield at 3:00pm, starring Carolyn Dixon as 101 year-old Bessie and Alisha Saunders as 103 year old Sadie.  Admission is free.

JULY

Independence Day Celebration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Bring a picnic, family and friends to the grounds of Historic Smithfield Plantation, the circa 1774 home of Revolutionary War Colonel William Preston and his wife Susanna. Free.

Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine. Exhibit kicks off at the Christiansburg Library. Museums of the New River Heritage Coalition are participating in a passport program to accompany the exhibit. More information here. The exhibit runs through August
21st and will move to the Blacksburg Library and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine with various programs at each venue.

Summer History Camps: Glencoe Museum. A unique chance for children ages 6-10 to experience some local heritage in a historical setting.

Saturday, October 2nd, 10am-5pm and Sunday, October 3rd, 12-5pm
Harvest Festival: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Celebrate the fledgling orchard consisting of several heirloom varieties included in Col. William Preston’s inventory. Craft and food vendors, historical demonstrators. Saturday features a craft beer garden with two local micro-breweries on hand to talk about their brews. Enjoy bluegrass and old time music throughout the afternoon as you check out heirloom livestock and poultry. Carriage rides to the cemetery will end with a cemetery tour of the Preston graveyard. Come one come all! $8 for adults and $5 for children 12-college, $4 for children 3-12, under 3 free. Beer garden admission is $5.

Holidays at Smithfield: Historic Smithfield Plantation.
The celebration includes tea and savory and sweet treats in Susanna’s Tea Room and tours of the elegantly decorated 1774 home. In addition there will be traditional music, children’s activities, shopping in the museum store, greenery sales and more!
