FEBRUARY

Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. "Sustaining Montgomery County:
the History of Food and Food Production."

Art Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. Yon White and Byron Kelly. Reception February 6th.

Thursday, February 19th, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. African American Communities In and Around Blacksburg. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. In celebration of Black History Month, Charles Johnson, owner of the New Town Barber Shop, local resident and Blacksburg Museum Committee member, will speak about his recollections of the African American communities in and around Blacksburg. Mr. Johnson, a lifelong resident of Blacksburg offers many thought provoking insights into topics such as the integration of public schools and Virginia Tech. In the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Thursday, March 5th, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. A Historical Perspective on the Town Planning of Blacksburg.  Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation.  Jack Davis, FAIA, Reynolds Metals Professor and Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, will present a talk which includes many photographs of buildings that have been demolished during the Town's history in the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Thursday, March 19th, 6:30pm
Lecture Series. Legends & Landmarks. Glencoe Museum. Joe Tennis, author of several books about the unique places of Southwest Virginia, will speak about his new book "Legends and Landmarks Along Highway 58."

Tuesday, March 31st
Spring Guild Trip: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Join the Smithfield Guild for a bus trip to the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, with stops to visit Virginia's First Lady at the Executive Mansion, and a wine tasting Barren Ridge Vineyards. Register by March 16th. $50.

APRIL

Saturday and Sunday, April 4th and 5th
Opening Weekend: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Smithfield opens for the 2009 season with a celebration including colonial demonstrators and reenactors.

Friday, April 17th and Saturday April 18th
Arias and Airs: Mongomery Museum. A joint performance featuring a mix of opera with Celtic and Appalachian traditional music. Robert Chafin of Hanover Germany, a leading European opera singer and native of Christiansburg, and the Celtibillies, an Appalachian and Celtic music group will appear on April 17th at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke and on April 18th at Christiansburg High School. All Things Yarn Show: Giles County Historical Society. A show featuring items made from yarn including weaving, knitting, crochet, crewel embroidery, and needlepoint. Weaving and spinning demonstrations and lectures.

Saturday, May 9th
Heirloom Plant Sale: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Learn about colonial plant materials that were indigenous to the area, and purchase heirloom plants for your own garden. Plants supplied by Crows Nest Greenhouses, owner Jay Smith, and the Smithfield gardens. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Smithfield garden will be on hand for assistance and to answer questions. The house will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

Saturday, May 16th, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
Huckleberry Jamm: Coal Mining Heritage Association. A mini-Coal Miners Day, this event will feature demonstrations, exibits, music, food, artifacts, and the opportunities to speak with retired coal miners and their families. Beside the Huckleberry Trail at Merrimac.

Saturday, May 23, 12 to 5 pm
Living History Day: Giles County Historical Society. Living history exhibits featuring Civil War re-enactors and 18th and 19th century craft demonstrators. The Museum, 1829 Andrew Johnston House, 1857 Doctor’s Office, and geneaological Research Office will be open for visitors. Free.

May 24th &25th
Cabin Days: Glencoe Museum. The Mary Draper Ingles cabin at the Ingles Farm will be open for visitors with demonstrations of life during the mid-18th century.

Radford Heritage Days: Glencoe Museum. Two-day festival at Glencoe Museum and Ingles Cabin & Farm. Learn more about Radford's heritage while having some fun.

Coal Miner's Day: Coal Mining Heritage Association. An annual event celebrating the heritage of coal mining in the New River Valley at McCoy Community Park.

Thursday, June 19th
Juneteenth Commemoration - The Untold Story: Smithfield Honors its Black History: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Join us for an evening of stories and spirituals to uplift and inspire on the lawn of Historic Smithfield Plantation. A commemorative event on “Juneteenth” (June 19th) to honor the lives of the African American slaves who lived and worked at Smithfield.

Lecture Series. Blacksburg Cemetery Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Led by April Danner; with information provided by the Gatekeepers, a group recording the history of cemeteries in Montgomery County.

Independence Day Celebration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Bring a picnic, family and friends to the grounds of Historic Smithfield Plantation, the circa 1774 home of Revolutionary War Colonel William Preston and his wife Susanna. Free.

Saturday, July 4th, Sunday, July 5th, and Sunday, July 26th
Cabin Days: Glencoe Museum. The Mary Draper Ingles cabin at the Ingles Farm will be open for visitors with demonstrations of life during the mid-18th century.

July 20th-24th and 27th-31st, 9am - noon
Smithfield History Camps: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Camps are offered Monday through Friday for rising 3rd through 6th graders.

July 28th and 30th
Summer History Camps: Glencoe Museum. A unique chance for children ages 6-10 to experience some local heritage in a historical setting. $30 per child.

Giles County Confederate Monument 100th Anniversary Celebration: Giles County Historical Society. Parade of Civil War re-enactors, encampment, antebellum fashion show, General Lee, and more! Free.

Saturday, August 22nd
Heritage Day: Mongomery Museum. Vintage craft demonstrations, war re-enactors, antique cars, horse and buggy rides, antuque tools and engines, live entertainment and music.

Saturday, August 22nd
Beer Tasting: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Come enjoy a cold beer on a hot August day and sample the beer varieties of several local micro-breweries while enjoying music, bar-b-q, and more.

Lecture Series. Mary Draper Ingles Property Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. a visit to the Mary Drapers Ingles property in Radford to learn more about early life in the area.

Apple Festival: Historic Smithfield Plantation. A different kind of fall festival! Come enjoy seeing our first (small!) harvest of apples from our Heirloom Orchard, purchase apples from a local vendor, and enjoy the other activities that make this event special.

Thursday through Sunday, December 3 to 6, 1 - 5 pm
Holidays at Smithfield: Historic Smithfield Plantation.
The celebration includes tea and savory and sweet treats in Susanna’s Tea Room and tours of the elegantly decorated 1774 home. In addition there will be traditional music, children’s activities, shopping in the museum store, greenery sales and more!

Saturday, December 5th, 5 - 7 pm
Christmas Open House: Glencoe Museum. Enjoy Santa Claus, cookies, and music in a beautifully decorated Glencoe Museum right after the Radford Christmas parade.

Sunday, December 6th, 1 - 4 pm
Christmas Open House: Giles County Historical Society. Enjoy the Andrew Johnston House decorated for Christmas.
