FEBRUARY

Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. Steve Mitchell, pottery.

Thursday, February 21st, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. Revelations from the 1860 Montgomery County Census. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. will speak in the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Art Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. Christiansburg High School students. Reception March 14th, 5-7pm.

Thursday, March 20th, 6:30pm
Lecture Series. The Families of Grace. Glencoe Museum. One of the oldest churches in the city, Grace Episcopal is closely intertwined with the early history of Radford. Tracing its prominent families, local historian and geneaologist Joanne Moche, unearths many interesting details of Radford's past.

Thursday, March 27th, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. The Houses of Clinton Harriman Cowgill.  Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation.  Z. Van Coble, AIA will present a talk on local houses designed by Clinton Harriman Cowgill, the founder of Virginia Tech’s Department of Architectural Engineering in the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Art Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. Blacksburg High School Students. Reception April 4th, 5:30-7:30pm.

Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th, 10am to 5pm
Opening Weekend: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Smithfield opens for the 2008 season with a celebration including colonial demonstrators and reenactors.

Saturday, April 5th, 1-5pm and Sunday, April 6th, 1-4:30pm
A Celebration of the Needle Arts Show. Giles County Historical Society. A show featuring antique and contemporary items made with needle and thread (except quilts).

Art Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. Interactive art exhibit by Melissa Warp, artist. Through June.

Saturday, May 3rd, 5:00 pm
An Evening at La Riviere. Glencoe Museum. On the banks of the New River towers La Riviere, one of Radford's most intriguing mansions. Now, for the first time in decades, the Radford Heritage Foundation and owner A.C. Wilson will open this unique piece of architectural eccentricity for one evening only before it undergoes restoration. Tickets are $75 per person. All proceeds will exclusively benefit the various projects of the Radford Heritage Foundation.

Saturday, May 10th, 9am - 12pm
Heirloom Plant Sale: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Learn about colonial plant materials that were indigenous to the area, and purchase heirloom plants for your own garden. Plants supplied by Crows Nest Greenhouses, owner Jay Smith, and the Smithfield gardens. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Smithfield garden will be on hand for assistance and to answer questions. The house will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

Thursday, May 15th, 6:30pm (CANCELLED)
Lecture Series. Wall Farm Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. The Wall family will speak about the Wall Farm, located in Price's Fork, and part of Michael Price's origina land. The Wall family has owned this farm since the 1830s. The tour will feature a structure from the 1790s and the Price/Wall cemetery on the property. Lecture and tour at 2239 Merrimac Road in Blacksburg.

Saturday, May 17th, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
Huckleberry Jamm: Coal Mining Heritage Association. A mini-Coal Miners Day, this event will feature demonstrations, exibits, music, food, artifacts, and the opportunities to speak with retired coal miners and their families. Beside the Huckleberry Trail at Merrimac.

Thursday, May 22nd, 6:30 pm
Lecture Series. Arnheim Past and Future. Glencoe Museum. At this double lecture, Dr. Cliff Boyd and Hanns-Peter Nagel, director of the Radford Heritage Foundation, will present their findings/products funded by a cost-share grant with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Saturday & Sunday, May 24& 25, 12 to 5 pm
Living History Days. Giles County Historical Society. Living history exhibits featuring Civil War re-enactors and 18th and 19th century craft demonstrators. The Museum, 1829 Andrew Johnston House, 1857 Doctor’s Office, and geneaological Research Office will be open for visitors. Free.

Radford Heritage Days: Glencoe Museum. Two-day festival at Ingles Cabin & Farm. Learn more about Radford's heritage while having some fun.

Saturday, June 14th
Natural History Celebration: Mongomery Museum. A focus on our environment and cultural/historical heritage. Presentation and book signing by Fred First, autor of Slow Road Home; "Turf War" and interactive art exhibit by Missy Warp; and an open air event focusing on the awareness, preservation, and protection of our natural resources. On the grounds of the Museum will be a Farmer's Market featuring local organic and sustainable farmers who will offer their home-grown produce.

Saturday, June 14, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Coal Miner's Day: Coal Mining Heritage Association. An annual event celebrating the heritage of coal mining in the New River Valley.

Thursday, June 19th
Juneteenth Commemoration - The Untold Story: Smithfield Honors its Black History: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Join us for an evening of stories and spirituals to uplift and inspire on the lawn of Historic Smithfield Plantation. In partnership with Asbury United Methodist Church, St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church, and First Baptist Church of Blacksburg, Historic Smithfield Plantation will host a commemorative event on “Juneteenth” (June 19th) to honor the lives of the African American slaves who lived and worked at Smithfield. This program is the recipient of a grant from the Community Foundation of the New River Valley.

Thursday, June 26th, 6:30pm
Lecture Series. Keister-West House Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. David and Lindsay West will share their research on their home, the Keister-West House, located on Giles Road, which dates to the 1830’s. The property is a small part of the Keister Farm, and the tour will include the house, grounds, and a section of Strouble’s Creek that runs behind the house. Lecture and tour at 607 Giles Road in Blacksburg.

Friday, July 4th
Independence Day Celebration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Bring a picnic, family and friends to the grounds of Historic Smithfield Plantation, the circa 1774 home of Revolutionary War Colonel William Preston and his wife Susanna. There will be a Revolutionary War encampment at the site. Free.

July 14th through August 8th, 9am - noon
Smithfield History Camps: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Camps are offered in 4, one week sessions, Monday through Friday.

Summer History Camps: Glencoe Museum. A unique chance for children ages 6-9 to experience some local heritage in a historical setting.

Heritage Day: Mongomery Museum. Vintage craft demonstrations, war re-enactors, antique cars, horse and buggy rides, antuque tools and engines, live entertainment and music.

Thursday, September 18th, 6:30pm
Lecture Series. Newport, Virginia Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Doug Martin will offer a brief tour, slide show, and lecture on Newport, Virginia. Doug has been collecting photographs and stories about Newport for many years, and offers a delightful “step back in time” in this small community. Guests will also see models of several buildings that were destroyed by fire. Lecture and tour at Newport's Town Green, located next to the Methodist Church at 311 Bluegrass Trail (Route 42).

Saturday, September 20th, 1-5pm and Sunday, September 21st, 1-4:30pm
Pride in Our Heritage Quilt Show II. Giles County Historical Society. A show featuring antique and contemporary quilts.

Thursday through Sunday, December 4 to 7, 1 - 5 pm
Holidays at Smithfield: Historic Smithfield Plantation. An 18th century holiday celebration. Come tour the house decorated for the holidays in Colonial style, and have a leisurely cup of tea in Susanna’s Tea Room. Music, games, storytelling, and more!
Don't forget to shop the Smithfield Museum Store for elegant and unique holiday gifts, pewter, jewelry, brass, pottery, and children's gifts!

Saturday, December 6th, 5 - 7 pm
Christmas Open House: Glencoe Museum. Enjoy Santa Claus, cookies, and music in a beautifully decorated Glencoe Museum right after the Radford Christmas parade.

Sunday, December 7th, 1 - 5 pm
Christmas Open House: Giles County Historical Society. Enjoy cookies, hot mulled cider, and the decorated Andrew Johnston House.

Friday, December 5th, 5 - 7pm
Holiday Reception: Blacksburg Museum. Enjoy us for refreshments at Kent Square prior to the Blacksburg Christmas parade.
