FEBRUARY

Thursday, February 22nd, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. St. Paul A.M.E. Church Tradition: Keeping the Vision and Sharing the Faith. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Members of the St. Paul A.M.E Church will discuss the history of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination and their church in particular in the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Wednesday, March 14th, 6:30pm
Lecture Series. Wilderness Road - The Movie. Glencoe Museum. Presentation by Dr. John Rutherford and Dr. Fess Green (Author of
"Wilderness Odyssey"). Enjoy a movie from the late 1940s about the Wilderness Road and get the historical background about the road.

Thursday, March 22nd, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. The Wives of Fallen Heroes in the New Republic (1780s): Elizabeth Givens Lewis, Susanna Smith Preston, Eizabeth Henry Campbell Russell, Ann Henry Christian, and Mary Draper Ingles.  Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation.  Ellen Brown, Director of the Reynolds Homestead will speak at the Holtzman Alumni Center Assembly Hall, Virginia Tech, West Campus Drive. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Sunday, March 25, 2 to 4pm
Country/Blue Grass Jamboree. Andrew Johnston House. An afternoon of music to benefit the barn building fund for the Giles County Historical Society. At the Pearisburg Community Center. Free.

Saturday, March 31st, 10am to 5pm
Opening Day Celebration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Smithfield opens for the 2007 season with a celebration including colonial demonstrators and reenactors.

Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. "For Every Occasion: Clothing and Accessories of the 19th and 20th Centuries" exhibit. Through September 30th.

Art Exhibit: Mongomery Museum. "Paper Dolls a Quest for Identity" by Sandi D'Alessandro, artist. Through May 30th.

Friday, April 27th
Gowns and Ganache: Mongomery Museum. Opening reception for featured artist, Sandi D'Alessandro and the opening of our clothing exhibit. Admission free.

Saturday, April 28th
Lecture Series. Ingles Tavern Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Ingles Tavern stands at the end of the Wilderness Road on the New River across from the City of Radford. William Ingles, husband to Mary Draper Ingles, began operating a ferry across the New River in the 1760s, and opened the nearby tavern in 1773. Please be advised that visitors will have to drive a short distance on a narrow gravel roadway to reach the tavern, and some walking on uneven terrain will be required. We will offer the lecture and tour twice with times to be announced. Reservations will be taken beginning March 26, by calling the Blacksburg Museum at 558.0730.

Saturday, May 5th, 9am - 5pm
Heirloom Plant Sale: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Learn about colonial plant materials that were indigenous to the area, and purchase heirloom plants for your own garden. Plants supplied by Crows Nest Greenhouses, owner Jay Smith, and the Smithfield gardens. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Smithfield garden will be on hand for assistance and to answer questions. The house will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

Thursday, May 17th, 7:30pm
Lecture Series. Early Brick Architecture in the New River Valley. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Michael Pulice, Architectural Historian of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources will lecture in the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception with light refreshments in the lobby to follow.

Saturday, May 19th
Fine Arts Festival: Mongomery Museum. featuring: art for sale, judging and awards, Young at Art exhibit, live music and entertainment, fun tent for kids, BBQ & Strawberry shortcake.

Thursday, May 24th, 6:30pm
Lecture Series. This Old House: Historic Home Preservation in Radford: The Harvey House. Glencoe Museum. Radford architect Randy Jamison has been intimately involved in many preservation efforts. He will share some of his experiences and discoveries, focusing on his latest projects, the Harvey House and La Riviere, the "castle" by the New River.

Saturday & Sunday, May 26 & 27, 12 to 5 pm
Living History. Andrew Johnston House. Living history exhibits featuring Civil and Revolutionary War re-enactors who will camp on the grounds overnight and interact with visitors to the complex. The Museum, the Johnston House and the Dr.’s Office will be open for visitors and early crafts will be on display. Free.

June 1 - 30
On & About the Edges: Exploring the historic and visual perimeters of Blacksburg, a juried show: Blacksburg Museum. Local and regional artists exhibit work inspired by the eight historic buildings owned by the Town of Blacksburg at the Armory Gallery, 201 Draper Road.

Saturday, June 9, 10am - 5pm and Sunday, June 10, 1 to 5pm
Radford Heritage Days: Glencoe Museum. Two-day festival at three sites: Glencoe, Arnheim, and Ingles Cabin & Farm. Visit each site and learn more about Radford's heritage while having some fun.

Monday, July 18th at 6:00 pm
Juneteenth Commemoration - The Untold Story: Smithfield Honors its Black History: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Join us for an evening of stories and spirituals to uplift and inspire on the lawn of Historic Smithfield Plantation. In partnership with Asbury United Methodist Church, St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church, and First Baptist Church of Blacksburg, Historic Smithfield Plantation will host a commemorative event on “Juneteenth” (June 18th) to honor the lives of the African American slaves who lived and worked at Smithfield.

July 4th
Independence Day Celebration: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Bring a picnic, family and friends to the grounds of Historic Smithfield Plantation, the circa 1774 home of Revolutionary War Colonel William Preston and his wife Susanna. There will be a Revolutionary War encampment at the site.

July 9th through August 3rd, 9am - noon
Smithfield History Camps: Historic Smithfield Plantation. Camps are offered in 4, one week sessions, Monday through Friday.

July 31st and August 2nd, 9am - noon
Summer History Camps: Glencoe Museum. A unique chance for children ages to experience some local heritage in a historical setting.

Lecture Series. Walnut Spring: Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Walnut Spring was the home of Dr. James Hervey Otey and Mary Louisa Kent who married in 1855. The Greek Revival home was built in 1854 by Mary's father, James Randall Kent, founder of Kentland, and passed down through the Otey family. The house and surrounding farm are near present day Glade Road in Blacksburg.

Dr. Peter Wallenstein, Professor of History, Virginia Tech, will lecture in the Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Making Sports History exhibit. Exhibit of local sports history at six of the museums of the New River Heritage Coalition. Go here for more information.

Apple Festival and Orchard Dedication. Historic Smithfield Plantation. Enjoy the last beautiful days of autumn. Old-fashioned
apple-butter making in three kettles over fires will highlight the event,
which will include apple products, apple workshops, apple crafts for
children, and music. Mark your calendars for a laid-back day to celebrate fall before the snow flies!

Lecture Series. Archeology at Ingles Cabin. Glencoe Museum. John Jeffries will report on his archeological findings at Ingles Cabin.

Thursday and Friday, November 29th and 30th, 1 - 5 pm
