Honoring Lord Hamilton at Ingleside: Glencoe
Museum. On May 8th and 9th 1779, the captured British governor
for the
Northwest
Territories
Lord Henry Hamilton spent two nights in the home of William
Ingles near Ingles Ferry. In his diary, he wrote about the
wife of William Ingles, Mary Draper Ingles, providing the only
first-hand description of the famous pioneer woman. In commemoration
of Lord Hamilton’s visit, the restored home of William
and Mary Draper Ingles will be opened to the public at the
Ingles Historic Site. Visitors can learn more about the historical
significance of the event
from John Jeffries and his father Col. Lewis Ingles and enjoy
the historical reenactment of the period.

Bicentennial
Music on the Green. Andrew Johnston
House. The
Giles County Farm Bureau and Olde Towne Pearisburg Association
are sponsoring an evening of music performed by Giles County
musicians. The event, part of celebration weekend to commemorate
the county’s bicentennial, will feature songs from different
eras in U.S. and Giles County History. Bring your own chair, find
a spot on the Courthouse lawn and enjoy a lively and entertaining
program presented by some of the best known musicians in the county.
The Courthouse is located at the corner of Wenonah Avenue and Main
Street (SR 100) in Pearisburg, VA. Free.

on the Lawn. Andrew Johnston House. This
intimate art show and sale, sponsored by FNB Corporation, is
just one activity during Giles County’s exciting Celebration
Weekend to commemorate the Bicentennial of the County. Paintings,
fine ceramics, glasswork, sculpture, and assorted mixed media
works will be on display for sale by artists from around the
region. The art show will be held on the front lawn of the
historic Giles County Courthouse, at the corner of Wenonah
Avenue and Main Street (SR 100) in Pearisburg, VA. Free.

featuring
Civil and Revolutionary War re-enactors who will camp on the
grounds overnight and interact with visitors to the complex.

Lecture Series. The Grove: Lecture
and Tour. Blacksburg
Museum and Historic
Smithfield Plantation. The stately President's House
on the Virginia Tech campus, known as the Grove, was built
in 1902 to serve as the residence for Virginia Tech presidents
and their families. The Grove is a colonial revival structure
and sits on a hill above the western end of the Drillfield
and above the Duck Pond. Today, besides fulfilling its
original function, it also serves to house visiting dignitaries
and as a reception facility.

Heritage Quilt Show, Sale, and Workshops: Wilderness
Road Regional Museum. Free admission. Old, new and baby quilts, wall hangings,
old lace and needlework, pillows, quilt tops. Free 1-1/2 hourly

was never far away from this 1774 home. Learn more about
Southwest Virginia’s role in the Revolutionary War

Summer History Camp: Glencoe Museum. Kids
will get a chance to experience history by spending time in
a one-room schoolhouse and an elegant Victorian home. This
program will be an introduction to the lives of other children
from an earlier time – when this part of Southwest Virginia
was known by other names, such as Ingles Ferry, Lovely Mount,
or Central Depot – and their crafts, games, and chores.

Meet the Artists: Historic
Smithfield Plantation. A reception to meet local
artists Derek Parks and Trev Smith, whose works are being shown
in
the Smithfield Museum Store. Conceptualist artist, Derek Parks,
has reproduced the beauty of the furniture in Historic Smithfield
in a series of furniture portraits. These are drawn with watercolor
pencils on paper with applied layers of acrylic and latex. Craftsman
Trev Smith has been turning bowls since 2000. The Museum Store
is featuring bowls he created from part of a sycamore tree
that was once a part of Historic Smithfield
Plantation. The tree was thought to be over 350 years old.

Lecture Series. Fotheringay:
Lecture and Tour. Blacksburg
Museum and Historic
Smithfield Plantation. Colonel George Hancock was
born in Chesterfield County in 1754 and built his grand
plantation
estate, Fotheringay, in 1796 near present-day Route 460
in Shawsville. Colonel Hancock was trained as an attorney
and served as aide-de-camp to Count Casimir Pulaski during
the Revolutionary War. From 1793 to 1797 he served as
a Representative from Virginia in the United States Congress.
Visitors will hear a brief lecture on the home’s
esteemed history before touring the interior. Light refreshments
will be served. Directions
to Fotheringay: Follow US 460 East/US 11 North (Roanoke
St.) through Shawsville toward Elliston. An historic highway
marker for Fotheringay is located in the median as you follow
Rt. 460/Rt. 11. Immediately following this marker, turn right
into the second driveway marked #8339. Continue up the paved
driveway to the large brick home. The lecture will begin on the
front porch. Please note: Parking next to the house is limited.
Those who are able to walk up the hill to the house are encouraged
to park
on the grass on either side of the driveway. Volunteers and signs
will be out to direct you to parking areas. Carpooling to the
site is also encouraged.

18th-century Woodworking Shop: Glencoe
Museum. Local craftsman John Talton – creator
of the successful exhibit “Tools that built a nation” – puts
his tools to work and will introduce visitors to the work of
a carpenter
300 years ago. The woodworking shop will produce
little items that will be on sale in the Museum Store.

Gingerbread House Competition: Montgomery
Museum. Build a Gingerbread House and enter the competition
at the Montgomery Museum. There
are categories for adults, children and professionals. A silent
auction will be held to determine the winners of the
contest. Bids will count as votes and winners of the bidding
will take home the gingerbread house. Houses receiving the most
votes/bids will receive awards and prizes. Entry
forms are available at the museum and on the website.
December

Historic Holiday Open House Tour: Montgomery
Museum. This
is a self guided tour with events, food and entertainment
at three historic locations. The
Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center will
feature décor from the Victorian
era, silent auction gingerbread creations, holiday art exhibit
and tasty sweet treats. The
Inn at Hans Meadow will be decorated in different themes, savory
treats will be served and photographs made in front of
the fireplace The Christiansburg Presbyterian Church will be
the scene of caroling, history of the church, and horse and buggy
rides in
the downtown area. Tickets
are available at the Montgomery Museum.
