APRIL

April 1st-30th
Jeff Roland, Auburn High School Art Exhibit: Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center.

Thursday, April 14th
Lecture Series. Kentland Lecture and Tour: Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation . Dr. Samuel Cook, Associate Professor, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Virginia Tech. Tour 6:00-7:00pm at Kentland. A brief reception will be held at 7:00pm followed by a lecture at 7:30pm also at Kentland.
Dr. Samuel Cook will lead a tour of the historic Kentland grounds and home followed by a lecture. In 1820 James Randall Kent (1792-1867) acquired 1,630 acres of Virginia Tech's present tract. As he prospered in agriculture, Mr. Kent went on to build Kentland Manor in 1834-35, a two-story, five-bay, Flemish-bond brick home. Behind the manor house is a brick meat house with a wood-shingled pyramidal roof. These buildings, a mill, and other structures comprise the 350-acre Kentland Farm Historic and Archeological District officially recognized by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources and the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Buffet Menu. Reservations at 5:30 and 7:00pm. Candlelight, all-you-can-eat $15.00, $7.50 ages 6 to 12, held at Wilderness Road regional Museum. Take outs available. Museum Pioneers honored. If desired, bring old china gift for 25th anniversary.

Robin Scully Boucher Exhibit: Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center. Exhibit runs through June.

Saturday, May 7
Heirloom Plant Sale: Historic Smithfield Plantation. 9am to 3pm Learn about colonial plant materials that were indigenous to the area, and purchase heirloom plants for your own garden. This year, Crow's Nest Farm of Blacksburg, is providing true heirloom plants. Old favorites, bursting with color, texture and interesting form, are very appropriate for today’s gardeners, who want a touch of history for their home gardens. The Smithfield Gardeners are also supplying several varieties of plants from the Historic Smithfield garden. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Smithfield garden will be on hand for assistance and to answer questions. The house will be open for tours at regular admission prices.

Sunday, May 8
Mother's Day Open House: Glencoe Museum. 1 to 4pm. Story-telling about some of the earliest families, including Mary Ingles’ escape from captivity and other scenes from her long life. Children will draw and paint pictures depicting scenes from the stories they’ve heard and try on old fashioned clothing from "grandmother’s trunk" to learn about historic styles of clothing. Refreshments will feature foods that might have been served at social gatherings on the Virginia Frontier

Genealogy Workshop: Wilderness Road Regional Museum. FREE Admission to Museum, five eclectic speakers, lunch, etc. 9:30am coffee and registration, 10am to 2:30pm. Great assortment of local history and genealogical books for sale, history papers in archives, informational handouts, assistance with DAR forms. Call 540-674-4835 or 540-674-0225 to register and pay later at the door. Cost including lunch is $15.00

Anyone wishing to loan, donate, or sell homemade items, please call Ann Bailey at 540-639-0351, the museum at 540-674-4835, or Joyce Simpkins, Coordinator at 540-639-2624. From June 27th through July 1st there will be 5 free 1-1/2 hour workshops on techniques such as “paper-piercing”, “curved piercing”, “heritage quilts” (photography), “binding quilts”, “yo-yo quilts”, “use of fat quarters”, and “crazy quilts.” Day and time for workshops TBA. Also quilt books to looks at and a door prize.

Lecture Series. Elaine Dowe Carter lectures on Christiansburg Institute: Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. 7:30-8:45pm, Blacksburg Town Council Chambers, Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 South Main Street. Reception to follow with light refreshments in the lobby.
During its long history from 1866 to 1966, the Christiansburg Institute served as a unique educational institution boasting a 185-acre campus and fourteen buildings. Educating African-American students from counties throughout the area for 100 years, the Institute was recently refounded in an effort to preserve its history. An active Alumni Association and local volunteers work to present exhibits and document the story of an institution characterized by excellence and opportunity.

Christiansburg Institute and Odd Fellows Hall Centennial Celebration. 10:00am to 4:00pm Gilbert Street (Off Main Street behind the Wendy’s near the Collegiate Square Shopping Center)
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Odd Fellows Hall on Gilbert Street in Blacksburg, together with the Christiansburg Institute, will host an outdoor celebration with games, food and craft vendors, and further information about the future of both the Odd Fellows Hall and the Christiansburg Institute.

Saturday, July 2nd

July 11 to July 29
Smithfield History Camps: Historic Smithfield Plantation. 9am to noon. Camps are offered in 3, one week sessions, Monday through Friday for rising 3rd through 6th graders. Children will explore American Indians, with course material repeating, in weeks 1 and 3 and Early European Settlers in week 2 through history, art, and science activities.

Saturday, July 16th
Colonial Dinner: Wilderness Road Regional Museum

July 25 to 29
Summer History Camp: Glencoe Museum. 9am to noon. At the Glencoe Museum and Ingles Cabin for children ages 5 to 12. To include crafts, drama, music, and other frontier related activities, getting ready for New River Homecoming celebration to follow, on July 30 and 31st.

July 30-31
New River Homecoming 2005: Glencoe Museum. Celebration of Mary Draper Ingles' return to the New River Valley 250 years ago. At the Ingles’ Cabin, on the original property where William and Mary Ingles lived, starting in the 1760s. Food, music, crafts, story-telling, tours of Ingles property, reenacters, children’s activities, including performances of skits based on scenes from Mary’s life.

AUGUST

August 1-5
Smithfield History Camps: Historic Smithfield Plantation. 9am to noon. Camp is offered in a one week session, Monday through Friday for rising 7th through 10th graders.. Children will explore Early European Settlers through history, art, and science activities.

Thursday, September 22nd
Lecture Series. Solitude Lecture and Tour: Blacksburg Museum and Historic Smithfield Plantation. Elizabeth Fine, Professor and Chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Virginia Tech. Tour 6:00-7:00pm at Solitude. A brief reception will be held at 7:00pm followed by a lecture at 7:30pm also at Solitude.
Elizabeth Fine will lead a tour of Solitude followed by a lecture. Starting as a humble log cabin in 1801, Solitude grew to become the home of two Virginia governors, and the home of Robert Preston, who donated the land on which Virginia Tech now stands. It is Virginia Tech's oldest structure, the "Homeplace" of the University. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and named a Virginia Historic Landmark in 1989.

Fall Festival of Arts & Crafts: Wilderness Road Regional Museum. “A magical time that celebrates the essence of fall all over the historic village of Newbern.” Quality handmade items, fun, food, entertainment, and craft demos. Friday set-up, Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, Sunday 11:00am to 5:00pm. Silent Auction ends at 4:00pm on Sunday, held at Wilderness Road Regional Museum. Free admission to everything and plenty of parking.

Mary Ingles Walk: Glencoe Museum. Commemorate Mary Draper Ingles' journey of 850 miles through the wilderness to return to the New River Valley. To be held in Bissett Park, Radford.
